Exemplifying Social Progress: Expanding, serving, and progressing our community through healthy habits, technology, and service programming.
The Gamma Epsilon Philadelphia City Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. strives to improve and further our greater community. As society strives to recover from an economic recession, we want to make sure that we also think about other facets of our lives that are also very important and sometimes neglected. Our chapter seeks to expand our community by helping to enrich the lives of members of the African Diaspora. We provide programming with emphasis on healthy living, from excellent eating habits to disease awareness and prevention and healthy relationships. Members of our community are often at higher risk for certain health conditions, and we want to raise awareness of these issues as well. Our chapter also serves our community through events like volunteering at a local soup kitchen to mentoring young students. Furthermore, we want to further our community’s progress through the use of technological innovation to advance academic and career goals. This theme will be interwoven into our programming this academic year.
Gamma Epsilon holds an annual scholarship to support area high school students further their education. We rename the month of February "AKA Month" as a tribute to Black History Month and the contributions made by our Sorority to African-American culture. During this month, we host events ranging from an exhibition on the origins of stepping to a soul food dinner. In years past we have brought several renowned speakers to our campuses.
